James Rutenberg was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on December 22, 2012, a day before his 6th birthday. I had stayed up the whole night before watching my son throw up, drink water and throw up again all throughout the night. The week before we noticed many red flags looking back such as extreme thirst, wetting the bed, and weight loss of about ten pounds. That morning I carried my almost lifeless sons body into the ER not knowing if he would make it. A swarm of nurses and doctors came in as I sat there helpless. As James was being hooked up to iv and insulin the doctor told me he was almost positive he had type 1 diabetes. I thought diabetes? Ok so what. I had no idea that our lives and his would be changed forever. James has a pancreas that does not work therefore he gets 4 shots of insulin through syringe needles a day. He also tests his blood sugar about 10 times a day. That being said he also has to deal with high and low blood sugars which create a whole range of emotions and a feeling of sickness in his body. I dream of a day that we find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes, but if we never see that day I am praying for an easier way for James to take blood sugar and get his insulin and regulate his blood. We have Hope in our fight and we thank every single person who cares and contributes to fighting for a cure for James and all the kids who have to have this lifestyle as their normal.

James's Story

By Tommy Rutenberg (James's Dad)

Prior to our son James 6th birthday, he was the picture of perfect health. Within a week he was fighting for survival. We attributed his lethargic condition and insatiable desire for water as “flu like” symptoms so we decided to wait it out. That decision almost cost him his life. After 3 plus days of no improvement we took him to the Pediatrician, that afternoon James was admitted to St Peters University Hospital Critical Care Unit, with a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. Unlike the more common, Type 2 Diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes eventually causes the Pancreas to cease insulin production which in turn leads to complete insulin dependence. As a result, the body’s organs are taxed almost twice that of a healthy person. It is a physical and emotional roller coaster that no one should experience let alone a 6 year old boy.

As a family, we urge you to contribute in any way you can for James, for someone you know or thousands of other children who must rally their strength to battle this insidious disease. We pray for a cure but also must take action and do what we can as a family, as a community and as human beings to turn our sympathy into strength and resolve to not let this disease win. Join us in finding a cure.
